Pre-cut masks for painting the running gear of the Wirbelwind anti-aircraft vehicle, which was created on the chassis of the Pz. IV medium tank. They cover the rubber parts of the wheels, so the rim and the rubber are separated by spraying. The set is cut for the Wirbelwind kit from Tamiya.
The Wirbelwind takes its whole chassis from the Pz. IV, so on each side it runs on eight small road wheels paired into four bogies on leaf springs, with four return rollers above them. The wheels do not overlap, which is an advantage over the Panther or the Tiger, but in 1:48 scale they are genuinely tiny — a row of miniature discs tightly together, where the tire band forms only a thin band. A peculiarity of the later Pz. IV vehicles, among which the Wirbelwind belongs, is that their return rollers were made in an all-steel form with no rubber. Before you start masking, therefore, compare the roller parts with the wheels and mask only where the rubber really is.
The commonest problem with very small masks is not bleeding but the opposite: paint gathers at the edge of the mask and once it is lifted a raised ridge is left that looks like an outline drawn in pencil. It arises from too generous a coat. Spray several very thin passes, let the paint flash off between them, and lift the mask off as soon as you can. If a ridge appears all the same, do not varnish over it — you will remove it more easily with a light pass of a very fine abrasive and touch up any exposed plastic with a brush. On wheels this small a touch-up is quicker than masking again.
Paints, glue and the kit are not included in the package.
