The sheet is not a kit but a set of decals for finishing a model that has already been built. It brings roundels of the Royal Air Force in the Type D form, and further roundels in a low-visibility pink and pale blue form, completed by the markings on the vertical tail that are known as fin flashes. Elements of this type tend to be on the sheet in several sizes, so as to cover different positions on the fuselage, the wings and the fin and different types of aircraft as well. Xtradecal is a British maker of decals who has long devoted itself to exactly this: the markings of RAF machines.
The roundel is the basic identification element of British aircraft and its form changed over the decades in its proportions and in the depth of its colors; Type D corresponds to the later, postwar form. The low-visibility variants in a pink and a pale blue shade appeared on machines camouflaged for reconnaissance duties, where the aim was to play the markings down as far as possible while keeping them formally in place. The marking on the vertical tail completes the roundel and is placed on the fin.
The roundels are large and any unevenness beneath them will show — smooth the surface and clear coat it with gloss, or the decal will go dull and silver. Soak the sheet briefly and always only one piece at a time; carry the roundel over to the model with enough water under the film so that it can still be moved and centered against the panel lines. Measure the symmetry between the left and the right side out beforehand; the eye is very sensitive to a deviation in roundels. Once it is dry, use a decal softener, so that the film is drawn down onto the surface and the rivets, and finally cover everything with matte or semi-gloss clear according to the look required.
