An Xtradecal decal sheet in 1:48 scale with markings of the Royal Air Force from the period around 1990. The name gives the types Phantom FG.1, BAe Hawk T.1 and Panavia Tornado F. It is an accessory for modelers, not a kit.
The end of the 1980s caught the Royal Air Force at a time when colorful insignia were disappearing from airframes and low-visibility camouflage was coming in. The Phantom in the FG.1 form was then seeing out its days in the interceptor role, the Tornado in its fighter form was taking over the defense of the airspace above the North Sea, and the Hawk T.1 provided advanced training and reserve combat duties at the same time. The result is a palette of gray shades, small warning legends and subdued unit insignia that gives models of the period an unmistakable character.
Subdued markings tend to be printed in fine grays and are easily lost on a dark surface, so try the layout dry beforehand. Small legends suffer when a knife nicks them, so separate them with a margin and let the excess carrier float away in the water. A final semi-matte varnish unifies the small features without drowning them under a layer of gloss. On the cockpit frames proceed in sections.
