About product

Montex masking set 1:48 Reggiane Re.2005 — glazing outside and inside

This is a set of self-adhesive masks for a model of the Italian Reggiane Re.2005 fighter in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit and not a decal sheet but an accessory for painting: the masks cover the glazed areas and leave only the canopy frames open, so that they can be sprayed in the same color as the surrounding skin. According to the name the set is in two parts in the sense that it deals with both the outside and the inside of the cockpit.

Why mask both sides

The canopy frames are visible on a finished model from inside as well, and in reality they tend to be a different shade from the outside — usually the interior color inside and camouflage outside. When only the outside is masked, bare plastic shows through the clear part and the cockpit looks flat. Working with the inside masks takes more effort, but the result is markedly more credible, especially on a model in 1:48 scale, where you can see well into the cockpit.

Procedure and tips

Wash the clear part first in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let it dry in the open air — grease from fingers is the commonest reason a mask holds badly. Move the masks with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, seat them dry and only then press them down with a soft wooden stick, above all in the curves, where the film tends to lift. It works well to spray a thin covering coat in the interior color or clear varnish first: it seals the edge of the mask and any run-under then does not show. Lay the color itself on in several light coats, as a heavy coat creates a step at the edge. Lift the masks soon after they are dry, with a pull at a shallow angle to the surface.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who want sharp cockpit frames with no going over them by brush
  • builders of Italian fighters of the Second World War in 1:48
  • those bothered by an untreated frame showing through when looking into the cockpit
  • beginners who have trouble with masking tape on curved canopies

The set holds masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a set of masking films for the canopy glazing. The model itself has to be obtained separately.

The canopy frames are visible from inside as well and tend to be a different shade from the outside. The inside masks let you spray them in the interior color, so that bare plastic does not show through the clear part.

Lift them soon after the paint has dried, with tweezers and a pull at a shallow angle close to the surface. It also helps to spray a thin sealing coat beforehand, which seals the edge of the mask.
