This kit from the Taiwanese manufacturer Freedom Model Kits brings the single-seat attack variant of the AIDC aircraft, designated Lei Ming, in 1:48 scale. The model is supplied as a conventional kit to be glued and sprayed.
The XA-3 Lei Ming is a single-seat attack variant derived from the two-seat AIDC AT-3 trainer. It keeps the basic layout of the original machine, that is a pair of small jet engines, a straight wing with good low-speed qualities and sturdy landing gear, but in place of the rear instructor's seat it carries equipment for the combat role. The program came about at a time when the Taiwanese aviation industry was building development capacity of its own and looking for a cheap light attack platform derived from an already established design. It is a fairly rarely modeled subject that you will not ordinarily find in 1:48.
Paint and shade the cockpit and the landing gear bays before the fuselage is closed up. The fuselage is fairly slender, so check whether the model sits on its tail and add nose weight if necessary. Glue with thin plastic cement and sand the joints on the top and the bottom of the fuselage carefully, as they are clearly visible. Spray the camouflage with an airbrush, mask hard transitions with tape and keep the nozzle further from the surface for soft ones. Fit the underwing stores only after the varnish has gone on, otherwise you complicate the masking needlessly. Use a gloss coat under the decals and matte down only at the very end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
