This is an accessory for figures in 1:48 scale, not a kit of a model. The set contains castings of Russian winter felt boots, that is footwear with a markedly thicker wall and a softer outline than an ordinary leather military boot has. The parts are fitted onto the legs of a figure during a conversion, or are used as part of the set-aside equipment on the base of a diorama.
Russian winter boots, known as valenki, are made of felt rolled into a single piece with no seams and no separate sole. That is exactly why they have their typical rounded, slightly shapeless outline and a noticeably wider calf section. Felt insulates well in a dry frost, but in slushy snow it soaks through, and so rubber galoshes were often pulled on over them. On a model it is precisely that soft shaping that is crucial — if you paint the boots like leather with sharp edges, the result will come across badly regardless of the quality of the casting.
Separate the castings from the casting block with a fine saw, level the surface left after the cut with a file and try dry how the boots follow on from the legs of the figure. With resin parts use super glue; glue for plastic does not hold on them. Before painting, wash the casting in lukewarm water with a detergent, so that no release agent from the mold stays on the surface. Paint matte and with no sheen — felt does not reflect light. A gray-brown base, a dark wash into the folds and a light dry brushing with a lighter tone, which draws the texture of the material out, work well. Complete the bottoms of the boots with a pigment according to the surface the figure stands on.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a figure. Paints, glue and further parts are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
