A resin detail accessory in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Brengun. It is not an aircraft kit, but replacement main landing gear wheels for a model of the Douglas SBD Dauntless carrier dive bomber. Compared with the parts from an ordinary kit, cast wheels tend to be sharper in the drawing of the tread as well as in the detail of the rim, and the sanding of the parting seam around the whole circumference of the tire is done away with. The number of parts is given on the packaging.
The Douglas SBD Dauntless was a carrier dive bomber of the US Navy used in the Pacific during the Second World War. It was an all-metal two-seat monoplane with fixed landing gear and with dive brakes on the wing that allowed a steady steep descent onto a target. The design was sturdy and it proved itself in service even where many hours over the sea were expected of a machine. On this type the main wheels were partly covered by aerodynamic spats, so what an observant viewer notices most is exactly the shape of the tire and the drawing of its tread.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap and let them dry, otherwise the paint will not hold on mold release agent residue. Cut the casting block off with a saw at a place that will disappear into the gear fork once the wheel is glued on. Paint the tire and the rim separately - a masking disc of tape or a template suits the rim, or the tire can be painted first and the rim finished with a brush. Reach for a dark gray shade on the tire rather than pure black; real rubber always looks lighter in scale than you expect. A fine hint of dust on the sides and in the tread drawing comes in useful at the end.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
