This item is not an aircraft kit but a resin accessory from the Czech maker Eduard. It replaces the powerplant on a 1:48 Sopwith Camel model with a finely rendered Bentley rotary engine. On First World War biplanes the engine is largely visible under a short cowling, so every cylinder, every fin and every small pipe counts on a finished model — and this is exactly where injection-molded plastic cannot match a casting.
The Sopwith Camel was among the best-known British fighter biplanes of the end of the First World War. It was powered by rotary engines of several types, one of them the Bentley series, in which the whole cylinder block turned together with the propeller around a fixed crankshaft. The rotary layout gave the light airframe a good power-to-weight ratio, but it also increased the gyroscopic moment, which earned the Camel a reputation as an agile but demanding machine. Versions with the Bentley engine can be told from machines with other engines by the shape of the cowling and by the exhaust arrangement.
Wash the parts first in lukewarm water with detergent. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw, sand the surfaces wet and protect your breathing. Resin is bonded with cyanoacrylate glue only. Paint the engine on its own, before you seat it in the fuselage — over a primer, in a metallic shade, and then bring the cylinders to life with a dark wash and a fine dry brush so that the finning stands out. A graphite pencil will suggest the polished sheen on the cylinder heads. Dry-fit the cowling; the space under it tends to be tight once the part has been swapped.
