About product

Photo-etched landing flap set for the Spitfire Mk.Vc and Seafire Mk.II in 1:48 scale

This item is not an airplane model but a detail accessory: a set of parts etched from thin metal sheet, intended to replace the landing flaps on a model of the Spitfire Mk.Vc or its naval counterpart the Seafire Mk.II in 1:48 scale. The point of an etch is obvious here at first glance: a real flap is a sheet metal structure a few millimeters thick, which injection-molded plastic can never render thin enough in this scale. An etch also makes it possible to show the inner face of the flap and the recess in the wing, which cannot be seen on closed plastic parts. The manufacturer is Special Hobby, a Czech brand known for aircraft models and accessories.

The real subject

The Spitfire Mk.Vc was the variant with the so-called universal wing, which allowed various combinations of armament. The Seafire Mk.II was derived from it as a carrier machine adapted for operation from aircraft carriers. The landing flaps of the Spitfire were operated pneumatically and in practice worked in essentially two positions — retracted, or fully extended. On parked machines you therefore usually see the flaps retracted; extended flaps belong to the landing configuration or to maintenance.

Usage tips

Degrease the photo-etched parts with alcohol before gluing and do not touch them with bare fingers. Separate them from the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, not with sprue cutters. Make the folds in a photo-etch bending tool or between two razor blades, always along the etched groove. Stiff material can be briefly annealed over a flame so that it softens and does not crack. They are bonded with super glue or a small drop of epoxy; cement for plastic has no effect on metal. Apply a primer before painting, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth metal.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who want to build a Spitfire or a Seafire in 1:48 scale with the flaps extended
  • builders experienced with photo-etched parts and with folding them
  • those looking for a faithful sheet thickness where plastic will not do

This is an accessory, not a complete model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a photo-etched accessory with flaps that is installed into a plastic Spitfire or Seafire kit in 1:48 scale. The kit itself has to be bought separately.

A real flap is thin sheet metal. Injection-molded plastic is always thicker in this scale, whereas an etch gives a realistic edge thickness and lets you show the inner face of the flap as well.

Fold along the etched groove in a bending tool or between two razor blades. With harder material a brief annealing over a flame helps, after which the metal softens.

Degrease the parts with alcohol and spray a primer. Without a base coat the paint rubs off smooth etched metal easily.
