A double-sided frame mask for the SR-71 Blackbird: pieces for the inner and the outer face of the glazing, 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The double-sided form of the stencils for the cockpit frames of the high-speed SR-71 reconnaissance machine, 1:48 scale. Besides the outer masking the set also holds pieces matching the inner wall of the transparent parts. The kit the pieces are cut for is given by the name of the item.
While the pilot sits behind a front pane, the operator in the rear cockpit has no window facing forward. He has only side panes and the picture from the reconnaissance equipment. The glazing was made of quartz glass and was unusually thick, because in flight it heated up to temperatures ordinary materials cannot stand. On a model that thickness shows: through the massive clear part the inner face of the frame is clearly noticeable and in a clear color it looks like a light strip in the middle of an otherwise dark machine.
First mask and spray the inner side and let it harden overnight. Only then seat the clear part in the fuselage, cover it with the outer pieces and carry on with the base coat. Build the dark shade from several light coats; a heavy application at the edge of the stencil creates a step that is conspicuous on the large smooth surfaces of this aircraft. Let the last coat only set and take the pieces off at once.
