A glazing mask for the cockpits of the SR-71A Blackbird: outer stencils for the windows and frames of the reconnaissance machine, 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
An outer glazing mask for the SR-71 reconnaissance aircraft in 1:48 scale. The kit the set is cut for is given in the name of the item. The glazing of this machine is among the most unpleasant to be met on a model: the panes are small, deeply recessed and surrounded by wide frames.
The SR-71 was created in the design office nicknamed Skunk Works under the leadership of Kelly Johnson. It flew at over three times the speed of sound at altitudes around twenty-five kilometers and against launched missiles it defended itself not by maneuvering but by simply accelerating and climbing. The airframe is largely of titanium, because aluminum would not have withstood the heat on the leading edges. In flight the structure expanded so much that the tanks sealed perfectly only once warmed through, and the machine therefore took on fuel in the air after takeoff. Power came from a pair of Pratt and Whitney J58 engines, which at high speeds behaved more like a ramjet than a classic jet engine.
The crew consisted of a pilot and a reconnaissance systems operator, each under a separate canopy of his own. The whole aircraft also carried a dark finish with high emissivity, so the slightest overspray on the glass shows against it at once. A stencil cut to the shape of a pane is more reliable here than the tape method, because the corners stay square.
