Photo-etched engine compartment grilles for the SU-152 in 1:48 scale are an accessory for a plastic kit you have already bought, not a model. They replace blind plastic engraving with genuinely see-through mesh.

On models of military equipment the grilles above the engine are among the most rewarding improvements of all. A plastic kit deals with them by engraving into a solid area, so that seen from above they look like a blind plate. A photo-etched grille is genuinely perforated - light passes through it, and seen from the side there is shadow and depth. The set from the Czech maker Hauler is fitted to the Bronco plastic kit; it is neither a kit nor a finished model.
The SU-152 was a Soviet heavy self-propelled gun introduced in 1943 on the chassis of the KV heavy tank. It carried a 152 mm gun-howitzer in a fixed superstructure and was meant for destroying fortifications and heavily armored targets alike. The engine compartment in the rear of the hull cooled a diesel engine, and the grilles above it had to let a great volume of air through while protecting the radiators against fragments. They are therefore fairly extensive, and on a model everyone who looks at the vehicle from above sees them.
No empty cavity of the model should show through beneath the grille - it pays to blank the space under it off with card painted black or to suggest a radiator. Apply the glue with a pin around the edge only, or it will run into the openings and the effect will disappear. Grilles are best painted with an airbrush from a greater distance and in thin coats, so that the openings do not clog. At the end press a dark wash into them and go over the upper edges by drybrushing - the impression arises of a dusty metal screen into which leaves and mud have fallen.
