The middle grade of a masking set in 1:48 scale from New Ware. This is neither a kit nor a model of the aircraft but an accessory for painting. The templates are cut from Japanese kabuki paper, that is, from thin washi paper with a gentle adhesive, which adapts well to rounded surfaces and leaves no residue behind when removed. The ADVANCED grade lies between the smaller BASIC and the most extensive EXPERT, and both of those variants are available for the same subject.
The Su-33 is a carrier fighter derived from the Su-27 and adapted for operation from a ship's deck. It received folding wings, canard foreplanes, a strengthened landing gear and an arrestor hook. Typical of it are the large cockpit canopy, the pair of engines separated by a flat center fuselage and the large tail surfaces. The designation Flanker-D comes from the NATO code system. The framing of the cockpit and a row of smaller transparencies make masking this type by hand a slow job, which a pre-cut set shortens markedly.
Degrease the surface and let it dry. Lift the individual masks with tweezers, seat them accurately and press the edge down with a toothpick. Apply the paint in thin coats perpendicular to the masked edge, not at an angle under it. A proven procedure is to spray the edge with the shade of the base first, so that any leak is filled with the same color, and only then to apply the target shade. Take the mask off shortly after it has dried.
This is an accessory for painting, not a kit. Paints, glue and the model are not included in the package. Check before you buy that the set matches the kit you want to use it on.
