Pylons are fairly unobtrusive on a model of a combat aircraft, but they carry the whole stores configuration and their shape has a marked effect on how the model reads from below. Injection-molded plastic renders them in a simplified way, because the complex body of a pylon and its attachments are hard to do in a mold. This set from Metallic Details replaces them with parts that have crisper edges and a better-drawn surface. It is not a model of the aircraft but an accessory for a kit.
The set replaces the plastic pylons on a Su-27 model in 1:48 scale. The original parts are cut off and replaced by more accurate ones, which pays off above all when you hang underwing armament from another add-on set on the model and want the parts to match in shape.
Cut the parts off the casting blocks with a saw and sand the face down so that it beds home. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and on a plastic surface it is worth roughening the mating face beforehand. Lay on a primer before painting. Pylons are usually painted in the same shade as the underside of the aircraft, but their sides are more markedly dirtied and the contact faces are rubbed, so a fine wash and a dry-brush pay off. Glue the underwing armament on only once everything has dried thoroughly, so that the joint does not give under its weight.
This is an accessory, not a kit. The model of the aircraft itself, the paints and the glue are not included in the package.
