An injection-molded plastic kit of the single-seat Russian Su-35S multirole fighter in 1:48 scale from Great Wall Hobby. The box contains plastic sprues, clear canopy parts, a photo-etched fret and decals; this release is aimed at a configuration with air-to-ground weapons. Great Wall Hobby is a modern Chinese maker that has built a reputation for first-class molds, accurate fit and fine engraving.
Watch out for confusion: the Su-35S is single-seat and has no canards. The two-seat Su-30SM and Su-30MKK are different aircraft with a different fuselage and cockpit. If you are looking for the two-seat version, this kit is not it.
The Su-35S is the most thoroughly modernized development branch of the Su-27 family. It is a single-seat twin-engine heavy multirole fighter; it first flew in 2008 and the Russian Air Force became its first operator. Its distinguishing features are the thrust-vectoring engines — the nozzles swivel, which gives the aircraft exceptional agility — and the ability to sustain supersonic flight. The designers left out the canards carried by the earlier experimental versions of the family; the loss of agility was to be made up for by the thrust vectoring. The aircraft carries a powerful radar and a wide range of guided weapons against both air and ground targets.
This is a conventional glued kit. Use thin liquid cement for plastic, which is drawn into the joints by capillary action. Remove the nubs after cutting the parts off, sand the fuselage and leading-edge joints and then re-scribe the engraving. Finish the cockpit and close it only after the interior has been painted and has cured. Apply a primer before painting — modern Russian gray-blue camouflage is best applied with an airbrush in thin coats. Lay the decals onto a gloss coat and set them with a decal softener, then unify the surface with a matte coat at the end. The engine nozzles deserve metallic shades and a fine heat discoloration.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
