The real subject

The Seafire is the carrier-borne form of the Spitfire, adapted for operation from aircraft carriers. Against the land-based version it was given an arrestor hook, strengthened landing gear able to bear a hard touchdown onto the deck, and equipment for service over the sea. The F.XVII version belongs among the late machines with the Griffon engine, that is with a vee twelve-cylinder, which brought higher power against the older Merlin and with it a more massive nose as well. It is precisely the combination of the slender wing of the Spitfire and robust naval modifications that makes the Seafire a rewarding theme.

What the sheet offers

A sheet of photo-etched metal parts from the narrower Zoom range, which the Eduard brand runs alongside its more comprehensive sets. Zoom does not mean a different scale but a smaller selection of parts aimed at the places that are most visible on the finished model. It suits you when you want to raise a model quickly or when you are only starting out with metal parts. Which parts the sheet carries and which kit it is cut for are given in the instructions of the manufacturer.

Working with photo-etched metal

• Separate the parts with a sharp blade on a hard surface, as twisting bends the metal.
• Make the bend in a bender or against the edge of a steel ruler in one stroke.
• Degrease the metal before gluing, otherwise neither the glue nor the paint holds.
• They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue or with two-part resin, always in a small amount.
• Cut the plastic part away only once you have tried the metal replacement dry.
