A small but very effective photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard that holds color-printed seat belts for the model of the Spitfire FR Mk.XIV in 1:48 scale. The STEEL version means that the fret is not brass but steel. At the same thickness steel is stronger and springier, it holds its shape once bent and it imitates a fabric strap draping loosely over the edge of the seat better. The package holds neither a model of the aircraft nor any other cockpit parts — it is a focused accessory for a kit already bought.
An open cockpit is the first place a viewer looks. Molded-in or entirely missing belts give a model away at first glance, whereas thin metal straps with the right sag lend the space scale and depth. On a single-seat fighter they are moreover the only prominent spot of color in an otherwise single-toned interior. The set is useful even when the cockpit is otherwise finished, because the belts can be fitted right at the very end.
Cut the parts out of the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and do not break them out — unlike brass, steel holds firmly in the tab. Before shaping, bend the part briefly over rounded tweezers so that the strap takes on a natural sag; sharp creases look unconvincing. Glue with super glue applied in the smallest possible drop. Leave the metal buckles untouched, as the printing is deliberately high in contrast and will settle in once the whole interior is given a matte coat.
The package holds only the photo-etched belts. The model, glue and paints are not part of it.
