About product

Improvised side skirts for the T-34/85 in 1:48 scale

A larger photo-etched set from the Czech maker Hauler for the model of the Soviet T-34/85 medium tank. It holds the parts of improvised side skirts, that is, the additional protection of the sides of the hull and the turret, which crews and field workshops fitted beyond the production equipment. It is an aftermarket accessory for a kit, which the modeler buys separately.

What the skirts did on the vehicle

Additional skirts of thin sheet, wire mesh or grating were fitted on supports at a standoff from the armor. Their point was to set off the shaped-charge warhead of hand-held anti-tank weapons before it reached the armor proper, which dispersed the effect of the shaped-charge jet. Against conventional armor-piercing ammunition they had no significance. The form differed from vehicle to vehicle, because it was not a production standard but a field modification, which from a modeling point of view is an advantage: you do not have to stick to a single scheme.

Building and painting tips

The set holds long, narrow photo-etched parts on which the main theme is staying flat. Leave the fret lying on a flat surface and cut the parts out of it with a scalpel, not by breaking them off. First lay the supports out dry according to the instructions and check that the skirt will be the same distance from the hull along its whole length. Glue gradually and in sections, so that it can be straightened as you go. Because it is a field modification, asymmetry suits it: one panel may be missing, another bent. Paint with an airbrush at an angle from both sides, or the inner face of the skirt will stay bare. At the end a dusty weathering in the gaps between the skirt and the hull is useful, where in reality dirt collected.

Who the set is for

  • builders of Soviet Second World War vehicles in 1:48 scale
  • modelers who want to set a model markedly apart from the basic form
  • experienced builders used to working with long photo-etched parts
  • dioramas on the theme of field modifications and worn vehicles

This is an accessory set, not a kit of the vehicle. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

They were fitted at a standoff from the armor so that the shaped-charge warhead of hand-held anti-tank weapons would go off before it reached the armor proper. Against armor-piercing ammunition they had no effect.

It is not. It is an accessory photo-etched set for a model that you buy separately.

It was a field modification with no uniform standard, so asymmetry and missing or bent panels look credible.

Rather not. Long narrow parts twist easily and the whole assembly calls for accurate placement of the supports.
