The requirement called for a carrier attack machine of about 30000 pounds. The chief designer came up with a proposal that weighed barely half of that and had to argue that it was not a mistake in the calculation. A triangular wing in one piece, minimal hydraulics and a ladder instead of steps made it a type that stayed in production for over a quarter of a century. The trainer variant was created from it by stretching the fuselage and adding a second seat, while keeping the load capacity and the flying qualities of the combat version, so it could be used for live training in gunnery and bombing as well. A number of countries later bought it as a cheap combat machine for a small air force.
On the two-seat variant the glazing is markedly longer and more divided than on the single-seater. The film comes with the shapes of the individual fields ready, so measuring and cutting are avoided. The individual fields are fitted from the windscreen and work proceeds rearward.
It is applied to both sides of the glass. The leftover material can cover the wheel rims or small areas on the fuselage where a sharply separated colored band is wanted. It should be lifted before the paint has fully hardened, otherwise a thin strip of finish along the frame risks peeling away with the film. A small airframe also means that the cockpit takes up an unusually large part of the silhouette, so a badly done frame easily outweighs the whole rest of the model.
