Seat belts are the first thing anyone notices in the cockpit of a finished model. In a kit they tend to be suggested only as flat relief on the seat, so the seat reads as empty. Photo-etched belts can be folded, draped over the edge of the seat and laid out the way they hang in a real machine, and that brings the cockpit to life at once.
The package carries photo-etched belts in 1:48 scale for a model of the U-2R, that is the high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft known by the nickname Dragon Lady. The designation STEEL in the name refers to the steel version of the etching. Against brass, steel is springier and holds its shape once bent, which is useful on belts, because they are meant to look as if they hang freely. The number of parts and how they go together is given in the instructions from the manufacturer.
Separate the belts with a sharp blade and sand the tabs. Shape them gradually, by pressing over the edge of a pair of tweezers rather than with a sharp fold, so that the transitions come out smoothly. Bond them with super glue applied in drops from a piece of wire; polystyrene glue does not hold on metal. The fittings and buckles are small, so it pays to work over a surface the part cannot escape from.
The set suits a modeler who leaves the cabin uncovered and wants it to stand being looked at from close up. But it also pays off where the view into the cabin is narrow: a sagging belt does more for the credibility of a cockpit than any other small part. The contents of the delivery follow the information from the manufacturer; the kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
