Great Wall Hobby 1:48 US Navy F-14D Tomcat is an extensive plastic kit of the last version of the famous carrier fighter. The parts are supplied unglued and unpainted.
Responsibility details are not available.
The kit belongs among the newer molds from the Great Wall Hobby brand and presents the closing variant of the Tomcat as it served with the carrier squadrons. The parts count is considerable for this scale, and photo-etched parts and decals are in the package too, so the model offers rich scope for detailing without having to buy further sets.
The F-14D came about through rebuilds and new production in the late 1980s. Against the older Tomcats it received General Electric F110 engines, which removed the greatest weakness of the original powerplant, as well as the AN/APG-71 radar and a digitally arranged cockpit. Under the nose it carried a twin sensor pod, and in later service the supersonic fighter took on strike tasks as well. The last aircraft left the front line in 2006, and with that the Tomcat closed more than three decades of service with the US Navy.
Finish the cockpit and the landing gear bays before you close up the fuselage; on a two-seat aircraft a great deal is on show afterwards. The variable-geometry wing calls for patience while the pivots are seated, so that it stays movable and symmetrical. You will bring the gray low-visibility camouflage to life by shading the individual panels and lightly accenting the engraved lines; leave the metal areas around the nozzles to the very end so that the metallic finish is not damaged by masking.
The kit arrives as unglued parts with no paint; tools and modeling chemicals need to be at hand.
