A resin ejection seat for the Swedish Viggen in 1:48 scale. The set also contains photo-etched parts and replaces the seat from the kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Saab 37 Viggen was an extraordinary machine for its day. A canard surface ahead of the main delta wing, a thrust reverser and the ability to take off and land on closed sections of ordinary roads made it the backbone of the Swedish defense at a time when it was reckoned that airfields might not survive the first day of a conflict. A short landing run and the ability to operate away from a concrete runway were design requirements on it, not a bonus.
The casting replaces the seat from the box and offers what injection-molded plastic cannot manage in this scale: the crisp edges of the frame, the shape of the headrest, the straps and the fine levers of the ejection system. The set includes photo-etched parts, which take care of the thin components where resin would be disproportionately thick. It is cast with modern technology, so bubbles and short shots belong more to the history of the field.
The seat is calculated for the cockpits of the usual Viggen kits, but on the kits of two well-known brands the floor of the cockpit has to be lowered, otherwise the finished assembly will sit too high and the canopy will not close down. Try it dry, then, before gluing it in. The casting is separated from the casting block with a saw or a cutting disc, not with nippers, and before painting it needs washing in warm water with detergent to get rid of the residue of release agent from the mold. Without that, paint holds poorly on the smooth surface and flakes off in whole patches at the first handling. It also pays to paint the straps and the handles before the seat goes into the fuselage, because afterwards a brush can no longer reach them.
