Vintage hydrants in 1:48 scale are a scenic accessory for a diorama. They belong to urban and industrial surroundings, where a sidewalk without small street furniture looks empty.

A set of street props for a diorama in 1:48 scale. It is not a vehicle kit and not a model in its own right, but an accessory for a scene already under way. The name denotes hydrants of an older, period form, that is the kind of street furniture that suits historical surroundings rather than today's street. The 1:48 scale is the scale usual with aircraft and with more compact scenes, where the balance between detail and the area taken up is watched.
A hydrant is one of those elements a viewer does not consciously register, but without which a scene does not sit right. It belongs on a sidewalk, by the wall of a house, by a factory fence or in the corner of a yard. In a view it also helps with scale, because it is an object of ordinary height from which the eye judges the size of the surrounding buildings and figures. It works well in company with other small street furniture: a lamp, a trash can or a bollard.
Wash the parts, let them dry and prime them. Cast iron street furniture is rarely clean: after the base color a dark wash into the recesses, fine wear on the edges and a hint of dust or rust along the lower edge all help. In 1:48 scale a part is noticeably smaller than in 1:35. Paint with a fine-tipped brush and rather twice thinly than once thickly, as a heavy coat clogs the fine surface here. Apply the wash sparingly and blot the excess at once. Set a hydrant into the sidewalk a little lower than the edge of its base reaches; an object that merely stands on the surface gives itself away.
