In the Second World War the bicycle was an entirely ordinary means of transport for infantry: quiet, undemanding on fuel and repairable in the field. On a modeling scene it also works exceptionally well, because it brings movement and links otherwise unrelated parts of a setting – a road, a building and a parked machine. Lean a bicycle against a wall and a diorama suddenly has a story.
The 1:48 scale is small, so the frames of the bicycles are thin and call for a steady hand from the moment of unpacking. It pays to paint the bicycles and the figures separately and to join them at the end, otherwise it is hard to get a brush in between them. Pick the spokes out with a fine dark line rather than solid paint. Finally add dust at the hubs and on the underside of the frame – that is exactly what turns a toy into a believable everyday object. Then seat the figures so that they do not all look the same way; a small change in the turn of a head gives the setting life.
