About product

Masks for the naval Westland Lynx in 1:48 scale

A New Ware masking set at the Advanced level for a model of the Westland Lynx helicopter in the naval versions used by several European navies. Cut masks in thin masking paper cover the glazing of the flight deck and other surfaces that are not meant to take paint while the model is being sprayed. It is not a kit but an accessory for the painting stage.

The real subject

The Westland Lynx is a British twin-engined helicopter that came about in the 1970s and became famous for its excellent handling. The naval versions were built for operations from the decks of frigates and destroyers: they have a folding tail section and rotor blades, landing gear adapted for setting down on a pitching deck, and equipment for fighting submarines and surface targets. The designations in the name of the set refer to machines of the German, British and Danish navies - the individual versions differed mainly in sensors and armament, while the basis of the airframe remained common to them all. For a modeler the Lynx is characterized by the extensive glazing of the flight deck, including the lower windows, which gives a good view but complicates masking.

Why reach for masks

Rounded windows with narrow frames are among the most unpleasant things to mask on a model. Unlike ordinary tape, a paper mask adapts to the curvature and does not lift in the corners. The Advanced level in this range is more extensive than the basic set - besides the glazing it also deals with further items to be painted, typically the wheels. The procedure is simple: degrease the surface, place the mask and press it down all the way around, spray at right angles and in thin coats. Lift them shortly after the paint has become tacky. Put the leftovers of the sheet aside; they will serve when masking small details on later builds.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of naval helicopters in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers put off by masking rounded windows with tape
  • Those interested in the machines of European navies
  • Airbrush modelers working with thin coats

This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

According to the name these are the naval versions Mk.88A, HMA.8 and Mk.90B, that is, machines of the German, British and Danish navies. The set is cut for a particular kit, which the manufacturer states on the packaging.

On rounded windows straight tape lifts in the corners and paint creeps under it. A cut mask has the shape of the window and adapts to the curvature.

Not if the procedure is followed. The adhesive is weak and the mask is lifted shortly after the paint has become tacky, so the coat stays whole.
