A wheelchair is among the accessories that give a scene a human dimension at once. It suggests a hospital or dressing-station setting, a postwar support area or an ordinary street situation, and it takes up a minimum of room. This part is not a model of machinery or a kit but a stand-alone object of a scene intended for a diorama or a display cabinet in 1:48 scale.
The wheelchair suits medical interiors, dressing stations and hospital corridors, civilian street scenes, houses with care services and the support areas of evacuation and postwar subjects. In a scene it works best paired with a figure, because an empty wheelchair standing aside acts as a prop, whereas a wheelchair that is occupied or held by a standing figure tells a story. Watch the direction the figures are looking in too: if they are all looking elsewhere, the scene falls apart into separate objects.
The wheelchair has a thin frame structure and delicate wheels, so work with it carefully and put it down on a soft surface. After washing and drying, clean up the parting marks lightly, and with the wheel spokes rather less. Lay the base color down in a thin coat, as a thick coat would flood the structure. Spray the frame in a chrome, nickel or dark painted shade, and paint in the upholstery with a brush with a fine point in a matte color, so that it contrasts with the metal. A dark wash will bring out the spokes and joints, and a fine dry brush will pick out the edges. Dust on the wheels and at ground level will set the whole into its setting. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin.
The accessory is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and a base for the diorama are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
