A sheet of waterslide decals in 1:48 scale from the British manufacturer Xtradecal. The third part of the series concentrates on machines of American design that served in the Fleet Air Arm. The part designation is a distinguishing detail of the series, not a repetition of the same sheet. The product is an accessory for a finished model, not a kit.
During and after the Second World War the Fleet Air Arm operated a considerable number of aircraft built in the United States. The machines generally kept their American design and shape but were given British national insignia, the British system of codes and often British shades of finish as well. For the modeler that means an attractive combination: a familiar American type in an unusual, darker naval scheme. It is this combination that is among the reasons why a separate series of sheets is devoted to the subject.
Naval schemes tend to be dark, and saturated bases will test the covering power of a decal. Light items on a dark surface may look translucent. The answer is to apply the decal onto a smooth gloss varnish, let it dry perfectly and, if need be, apply a second copy exactly over the first; a double layer raises the coverage noticeably. An alternative is to lay a thin layer of light paint under the place before the decal. Once dry, treat the joints with a softener and unify the whole model with a final varnish, so that the difference in sheen is not noticeable.
The package contains decals only. The model, paints and varnishes are not part of it.
