A basic set of die-cut masks of kabuki tape for a model of the F-14D fighter in 1:72 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The F-14 is an American two-seat carrier fighter with a variable-geometry wing: on take-off and landing the wing is spread, and at high speed it sweeps back toward the fuselage. The D version is the last form of this type and differs from the older machines above all in its equipment. The cockpit is long and two-seat and the canopy has clearly divided frames, so it shows well on a model how cleanly the transitions between the glazing and the frame are done.
The masks cover the clear panels of the glazing and leave only the frames exposed, which you then spray in the same color as the surrounding surfaces of the model. The edge between glass and frame comes out straight and crisp, which is practically impossible with a brush. In 1:72 scale that is doubly true: the frames are narrow and hand painting is a thankless job at that size. The pieces are die-cut to shape in advance, so cutting out against a template falls away as well.
The carrier tape is kabuki, that is a thin soft tape that follows the rounded shape of a canopy well and leaves no deposit of adhesive behind. The masks are stuck down before spraying onto clean, dry and degreased glazing. Lift a piece off the backing with tweezers, seat it along the frame and press the edges down so that paint cannot flow underneath. Spray thin coats and take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, while the adhesive is not yet holding too firmly.
The set is for modelers who want clean glazing and do not want to paint the frames by hand. A model, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
