A kit of the Japanese aircraft carrier Hiryu from the period of the Second World War. The 1:700 scale is established for ship models, so the finished piece sits well with other vessels in a collection. With the subject around 227 meters long, the model comes out at roughly 32 centimeters.
The Hiryu belonged to the Imperial Japanese Navy, abbreviated IJN in ship designations. She entered service at the end of the 1930s and became one of the ships that took part in the attack on Pearl Harbor. She was lost in June 1942 in the battle of Midway. A conspicuous feature is the island placed on the port side, an unusual choice on an aircraft carrier, and the wooden-planked flight deck.
It pays to plan the build by color: the deck, the side of the hull and the underwater part are sprayed separately and are easier to set off before the superstructures and the small parts go onto the deck. A wooden flight deck will take a gentle grading from plank to plank, but only a very careful one, so that in this scale it does not turn into stripes. Railings and rigging are what decide the final impression on a ship model; allow for patient work with tweezers. Cut the small parts off and clean them up only just before gluing, so that they do not get lost on the bench.
The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and accessories are not included, unless stated otherwise.
