Replacement landing gear wheels for builders of a large model of the carrier reconnaissance aircraft. The set deals with the part of a model that is always on show in finished work, because the aircraft stands on it. According to the name it is prepared for the RA-5C Vigilante type and it is in 1:32 scale.
The Vigilante came about at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s as a large twin-engined carrier machine with a markedly swept wing, capable of supersonic flight. In the RA-5C variant it served the US Navy as a reconnaissance aircraft with sensor equipment in an underfuselage section. Aboard aircraft carriers it was among the largest and heaviest machines ever launched from a catapult, and its landing gear therefore took considerable loads.
Build the landing gear leg first and let it cure thoroughly, and only then fit the wheel. On a heavy model it pays to reinforce the joint with a steel pin so that the weight of the aircraft does not bend the gear over time. Shade the tire to dark gray and the hub in contrast, and underline the gaps between them with a thin dark line. Light dust on the tread is discreet on carrier machines; there is no point in overdoing it.
