About product

The real subject

The Dewoitine D.520 was a French single-seat fighter that reached the units only shortly before the fighting of 1940. It was powered by a liquid-cooled Hispano-Suiza 12Y V12, its main weapon was a cannon firing through the hollow propeller shaft, and machine guns in the wing backed it up. Against its contemporaries it was agile and easy to handle, but it came into service late and in small numbers, so it could not carry the weight of the fighting. The machines that came through the fighting flew on and ended their service as trainers.

The model in 1:72 scale

The model belongs among plastic aircraft models in 1:72 scale. At this scale the finished machine has a span of around fourteen centimeters, so it fits into an ordinary display case and into a collection of fighters from the beginning of the war. The list of parts and the choice of color schemes are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

Building and painting tips

Work from the cockpit: once the fuselage is glued the inside can no longer be reworked. Before gluing, rid the parts of surplus material with a sharp blade and sand the mating surfaces, so that the fuselage and the wing fit without gaps. Tape a mask over the cockpit glazing before you start spraying, and apply the paint in thin coats so as not to clog the fine surface detail. French machines of 1940 wore multicolored upper camouflage and a light underside, but the layout of the patches differed from one example to another, so keep to the instructions.

FAQ

The French single-seat Dewoitine D.520 fighter from around 1940. It had a liquid-cooled Hispano-Suiza 12Y V12 and a cannon firing through the hollow propeller shaft.

In 1:72 scale the wingspan comes out at roughly fourteen centimeters, and the length is somewhat less. The model therefore fits even into a smaller display case.

Paints, thinner, glue and masking tape. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted, unless stated otherwise.

It is an ordinary kit in a small scale. A less experienced modeler will manage it, but it calls for patience with the cockpit glazing and the thin landing gear parts.
