A 3D-printed resin set of four Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial engines from Art Scale, intended for refining a model of the four-engine B-17 bomber in 1:48 scale. It is an aftermarket accessory – the finely detailed engines replace the simplified parts from the kit and allow the powerplants to be shown with the cowlings open.

The real subject

The Wright R-1820 Cyclone was a nine-cylinder air-cooled radial engine that powered, among others, the B-17 Flying Fortress bomber. Its characteristic ring of cylinders is one of the most conspicuous details of the real machine.

Use and tips

• Wash the parts to remove any uncured print resin residue and cut off the print supports.
• Bond with super glue (cyanoacrylate).
• The engines come into their own once the metal shades are painted and brought out with a wash.
• Especially suitable for models with open engine nacelles.
