An insignia masking set in thin tape, supplemented by a bonus variant of marking. Sprayed lettering on a matte service finish comes across more convincingly than a decal, because no carrier film shines and the artwork does not merely follow the surface but merges with it.
The V-22 tiltrotor came about from a requirement to carry an assault force farther and faster than a helicopter can while managing without a runway. The solution was huge rotors at the ends of the wing, which tip from the horizontal position into the vertical. With the Marine Corps the MV-22 version carries the designation of combat transport and also serves for refueling in flight and for search tasks. So that the machine fits into the hangar below deck, both the rotor blades and the whole wing fold, the latter turning along the fuselage. A shaft connects both engine nacelles, so if one turbine fails the rotors on both sides keep turning.
The service marking of the Marine Corps tends to be low in contrast, so the difference between the base and the lettering is only one of shade. It pays to mix the paint in small batches and make a test on an offcut of a frame. Lay the mask on a perfectly degreased surface. The lettering around the cargo compartment and above the entrances is small; raise it with fine-tipped tweezers.
