Masks for the yellow farewell scheme of the Japanese F-4EJ Kai Phantom in 1:48 scale. Two sheets, a demanding set for experienced modelers.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Japan Air Self-Defense Force sent its Phantoms into retirement with showy pomp, and one of the F-4EJ Kai machines was given an all-yellow finish with a pronounced mouth across the nose. The set of masks reproduces this farewell scheme along with the lettering, so a model can arise without a single decal.
The badge of the 301st Squadron was a frog, and its stylized form appeared on the fins of the machines throughout the unit's service. As the end of the Phantoms in Japan approached, the unit had the whole aircraft painted yellow and completed it with a large open mouth. The result was a scheme that became the most photographed Japanese Phantom of the last years of service and earned itself a nickname among modelers after its color.
The marking is complex and calls for precise alignment, sometimes for trimming a mask to measure. The tape fits even into the transitions between the fin and the fuselage, where a decal would cause silvering. The tongue in the mouth on the nose is painted in with a brush; a mask is not enough for it. Count on the spraying itself taking more time than building the airframe, and prepare enough test pieces for setting up the airbrush. With this set patience pays off more than speed.
