A resin conversion set from the Slovak brand Armour Models. It lets you build the armored command version from an ordinary M3 half-track. The package contains the conversion parts only; the donor kit has to be bought separately.
The modification was created in 1942 at the Desert Training Center near the Californian town of Indio for the then Major General George S. Patton. The open rear compartment was given an armored roof and sheet-metal covers hid the upper track run. The result was an enclosed command vehicle that differs strikingly from the production M3 at first sight, and that is exactly why it is interesting for modelers. More one-off modifications of this kind were made during the war, but most of them survive only in period photographs.
First wash the castings in warm soapy water so that the mold release residue disappears. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or an abrasive disc and level the surfaces; protect your airways when sanding resin. The joints are held by cyanoacrylate glue, ordinary plastic cement does not work here. A filler primer is useful before painting, because it unifies the shade of the resin with the plastic of the donor kit. Before that, look the parts over against the light: a thin film sometimes remains in the recesses, and the tip of a scalpel will remove it.
