The Subaru BRZ with the factory code ZD8 appeared in the fall of 2020 as the successor to the first generation. The recipe stayed unchanged: a low-mounted flat-four engine, rear-wheel drive, low weight and a firm rejection of forced induction. The displacement moved on, from two liters to 2.4 liters and to about 170 kW. That is exactly what removed the main complaint about the predecessor, namely the empty patch in the mid range.
The car was developed jointly with Toyota and is sold under its badge as the GR86. What mainly sets them apart is the shape of the front end and the suspension tuning; the engineering base is the same. The engine set low between the axles keeps the center of gravity close to the road, and from that comes the behavior for which circuit drivers and fans of drifting alike took to the type.
On a road car the surface of the body is everything. A primer in several thin coats, sanding between coats and a clear top coat will bring more than any added detail. The glazing belongs right at the end of the sequence and should be glued only in spots, because ordinary modeling cement fogs a transparent part. The trim and window frames come out best from a thin film or from a decal; with a brush, a straight line on a long edge is hard to hold.
A low sports coupe is recognizable among other cars at first glance, because the hood drops lower than on ordinary vehicles. Standing beside an older version of the same line it also shows nicely how little the silhouette changed over ten years and how fundamentally the engineering beneath it did.
