The Grumman HU-16 Albatross is a twin-engined amphibious aircraft intended for search and rescue. The underside of the fuselage has the shape of a boat, so the machine can settle on water, and at the same time it carries retractable wheeled landing gear for operating from a hard surface. Under the wingtips are stabilizing floats, and two radial piston engines with propellers see to the power. The designation HU-16A arose from the redesignation of the earlier SA-16A; machines of this version had the original, shorter wing, whereas the later rendering was given a wing of greater span.
The Albatross was built for a simple but demanding task: to reach a castaway or a downed airman, land on the water, take the person aboard and return. That is just why it has a robust hull able to bear settling onto a restless surface, and room inside for those rescued. Aircraft of this type served with rescue units and a number of them found their way into the inventories of further states, where they lasted in service for long years.
In the small scale the model comes out compact, the span being roughly seventeen centimeters, so it fits a display case even beside larger machines. A small scale favors a clean surface: once sanded, go over the fuselage joints and the leading edges with fine sandpaper, so the edges stay sharp. Build the model according to the manufacturer's instructions, and dry-fit the forward surfaces and the floats before gluing.
Rescue machines are typically marked by prominent high-visibility areas, which stand out well on a muted ground; their boundaries are more easily kept with masking tape. Paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
