About product

Before they were aces

Brand new pilots, brand new aircraft and a war still to come. The B and D versions were the first production Messerschmitts with the Jumo 210 engine, a wooden propeller and armament that a later fighter pilot would have considered weak. Even so, these were the machines on which a number of men learned what later made them famous: the two-aircraft element, the attack out of the sun and the break away downward.

Spain and the prewar units

The B version saw hard fighting in Spain, where it was used by the fighter group of the Condor Legion. It was there that the tactics the whole Luftwaffe later took over were born, and many a pilot scored his first victory there. Home units in Germany flew the D version at the same time, and their machines carried colorful squadron and flight markings, stripes on the cowlings and crests of a kind rarely known from the later war years.

Applying and finishing

The sheet is for 1:48 scale and is worked with like ordinary wet decals. The key is a smooth glossy surface under the marking, and patience: stripes across a cowling are better divided and laid in sections than fought with as one long piece across the curvature. A softener will help to get over the engraving and the raised detail.

Given that early Messerschmitts tend to have smooth surfaces with a minimum of panel lines, it pays to even the surface out with a clear coat once it is dry. Otherwise even a well laid decal will give itself away by a different sheen.

Anyone who wants to go further can lightly sand the marking with a very fine sponge once it is dry. The thin layer will then stop standing above the surrounding paint and will merge with it even in raking light.

FAQ

Both used the Jumo 210 engine, but they differed in details of armament, propeller and equipment. Visually they are very close to one another.

Yes, the sheet is aimed at early Messerschmitts. The later versions have a different cowling and radiators, and the markings would not fit them.

Yes, provided you keep to a glossy base and use a softener. Long stripes are better laid in shorter sections.

The composition of the sheet is not stated here.
