An add-on set of figures for models of heavy recovery vehicles, not a kit of the vehicle itself. The WLF abbreviation refers to the version of the heavy recovery vehicle named after its original maker; the set is designated by the range 1-4 and alternative heads for the French crew variant are included. Compared with the sister set for the M1A1 type, this is a separate item with its own part number, so the two can be combined and arranged around one scene without repeating figures.
A heavy recovery truck is tall, angular and full of technical equipment, and that is exactly why it loses its scale in a display case without people. The viewer has nothing to compare the height of the bed or the diameter of the winch with. A figure placed beside the vehicle solves that problem at once, without a whole diorama having to be built. The second advantage is compositional: the figures fill the empty space around the chassis and direct the eye to where the model is most interesting.
Before you start gluing, lay the figures out dry on a base or right beside the vehicle and check that their arms do not cross and that they look into the scene rather than away from it; with sets that come in several poses, this arrangement matters more than the painting itself. Parting lines are sanded with a fine file and an abrasive sponge, and sharp scraping with a scalpel should not be done on faces. Apply the undercoat thinly. It is effective to build a uniform up in three tones, a base, a shadow from a thin wash in the folds and a highlight with a dry brush along the edges, and only at the end to add the small pieces of equipment in a contrasting color. A matte varnish at the end unifies the surface. If you combine the figures with the sister set, vary the shade of the uniforms slightly; absolutely identical colors give away that these are production castings.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The vehicle, paints and glue are not included in the package.
