Nine tenths of a millimeter from the bulletproof family. The grade that closes the fine part of the grading and suits the more boldly laid out joints of larger plates.

Nine tenths of a millimeter closes the lower part of the grading. It tends to be overlooked, because it lies between two more conspicuous neighbors, but it is precisely that position which makes it a useful tool: it allows two groups of joints on one machine to be shaded apart without the difference looking forced. Experienced builders use it where they want to suggest that one panel is held more firmly than its neighbor.
When a photograph of the subject is poor and the shape of the head cannot be read from it, a reliable second clue remains: how densely the parts follow each other. A permanent joint needs many points placed close together, because each of them transfers only a small force; typically, therefore, you see a continuous row with small gaps, often in two or three bands side by side. A demountable mounting, by contrast, makes do with a few points spaced far apart, usually at the corners of a panel or evenly around the perimeter of a lid.
For a model that means a concrete task when laying things out. A dense band of fine points along a seam and a set of four distinct parts at the corners of a cover are two different languages, and a machine that speaks both looks convincing.
