Engine exhaust nozzles for the Phantom in the C and D versions of the US Air Force, cast with a thin wall for the Tamiya kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The F-4C version was the first form of the Phantom that the US Air Force took over from the naval design. It was delivered in series from 1963 and differed from the original machine in dual controls, heavier tires and provision for refueling from a telescoping boom. The F-4D followed on from it in the middle of the 1960s as a carrier of guided munitions with reworked equipment in both cockpits.
It is precisely the rear end of the fuselage that, on this aircraft, belongs among the places where the individual families diverge most markedly. Machines of the early air force period have their exhaust nozzles ended differently from the later line, so the parts of the two groups are not interchangeable. A modeler building an aircraft from Southeast Asia at the end of the 1960s will reach for the rendition for the C and the D; a different shape applies to later machines.
On this design one can see deep inside the nozzles, and a casting allows a thin wall and the inner ribbing to be kept, which an injection mold manages only to suggest. The inside is usually painted in metallic shades with a temperature transition toward the mouth, because the metal there changed color to blue-violet in service.
The parts are fitted before the fuselage halves are closed up, otherwise they will not get into the opening. A dry test before gluing is indispensable on a component that large.
The circular joint between the casting and the fuselage is easily filled with a thin putty, but sanding inside the circle is difficult. It therefore pays to paint the inside before the surroundings are sanded.
