An airbrake in the early form for the supersonic F-100, a cast part rounding out the Trumpeter kit in a large scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The real subject is the North American F-100 Super Sabre, the aircraft that as the first American production machine exceeded the speed of sound in level flight and opened what is called the Century series. It entered service in 1954, soon proved demanding to fly and in the 1960s found a second career over Southeast Asia, where it flew mostly against ground targets and directed attacks.
The airbrake forms a large panel on the underside of the rear fuselage. On the approach and in an attack in a dive it swung down, and it is one of those features that bring a model markedly to life: an open brake reveals the space beneath it and breaks up an otherwise smooth lower surface.
The word Early in the name refers to the older shape of the panel. The designers modified the brake during the life of the type, and a modeler building a particular machine from a photograph should compare the shape and the arrangement of the openings with a period photograph; the two forms are sold separately precisely because they are not interchangeable.
A cast part allows a thinner edge of the panel than a sprue from an injection mold can manage. The inner side tends to be more interesting than the outer: hydraulic lines and reinforcements converge there, and on a finished model they catch the attention when seen from below.
The set is sized for the Trumpeter kit in 1:32 scale. Before gluing, the recess in the fuselage has to be cleaned out and the brake tried dry.
