About product

Admiral Graf Spee 1937 1:700 — an Artwox Model veneer deck

A pre-cut natural veneer with a self-adhesive back and with the printed laying of the deck planks, intended to be stuck onto the plastic deck of a ship model in 1:700 scale. It replaces the molded relief with real wood with its own grain and natural unevenness of shade. The set is an aftermarket accessory: it holds neither a kit nor glue nor paints.

The real subject

The Admiral Graf Spee was a German armored ship of the Deutschland class, completed in the mid-1930s. In design she was a compromise between a cruiser and a battleship: a relatively small displacement, main armament of 283 mm guns in two triple turrets and diesel propulsion that gave the ship a long range. The year in the name refers to the prewar configuration, which differed from her later state. The career of the ship ended in December 1939 off Montevideo, where her own crew scuttled her after an action with a British force.

Application tips

It is good to settle the color of the wood before you glue the set on. Natural veneer tends to be fairly light and on a small model can read like a bare plywood board. So take an offcut from the edge of the sheet, brush it over with thinned stain or oil paint in a gray-brown tone and compare it with the surrounding areas. Apply the stain thinly and let it dry properly, as too wet a coat will buckle the veneer. If you are working on a part already glued on, protect the edges so that the medium does not run under the veneer and soak the adhesive. Fix the finished area with a matte varnish at the end.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building German warships in 1:700 scale
  • Those who want decks in a faithful wood shade without painting them by hand
  • Builders of display models with an emphasis on surfaces
  • Anyone interested in accessories that can be managed even without experience of photo-etch

This is an accessory to the Trumpeter 05773 plastic kit, not a model. The kit, glue, paints and photo-etched parts are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes, but carefully. Apply the stain thinly and watch the edges, so that it does not run under the veneer to the adhesive. It is safer to try the shade on an offcut and, if necessary, to brush the sheet over before laying it.

The form of the ship changed over time and with it the layout of the deck areas. The year gives the configuration the set is cut for, so that the parts sit on the right version of the model.

Yes. It is precisely in a small scale that the difference between a single flat color and the real grain of wood tells most, because the deck forms a large unbroken area that is the first thing seen when looking down.
