About product

HMS Hood 1941 in 1:700 scale from I Love Kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British battlecruiser HMS Hood as she looked in 1941, that is in the last period of her service. The model is released by I Love Kit in the 1:700 ship scale. The exact contents of the box, the number of parts and whether photo-etch or decal sheets are included are given in the manufacturer's contents list. Another brand releases a ship of the same name in the same scale, so check that this really is the I Love Kit boxing.

The real subject

HMS Hood was a British battlecruiser commissioned after the First World War and for many years the largest warship of the Royal Navy. She combined the heavy armament of 15-inch main guns with high speed, which she paid for with thinner deck armor. In the 1920s and 1930s she served mainly as a showpiece and flagship. In May 1941 she was sunk in the Denmark Strait during an engagement with a German force, and almost her entire crew was lost with the ship. The 1941 appearance captures the ship with added light antiaircraft armament and radar equipment.

Building and painting tips

First decide whether you will build the full hull or cut the model down at the waterline to sit on a sea base. The superstructure and the masts are very small in 1:700 scale, so it is best to spray them separately on a stick and only then fit them. The decks come alive with a darker wash into the seams of the planked sections and dry brushing along the edges. If you add photo-etched railings and rigging from fine thread, that is what lifts the overall impression most. The classic British camouflage schemes call for careful masking, and on the large surfaces an airbrush at low pressure helps.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of ship models in a single 1:700 scale
  • Anyone interested in the Royal Navy between the world wars
  • Modelers who like to add photo-etch and rigging to their ships
  • Builders of display-case groups that need a smaller footprint

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
