About product

The aircraft carrier Chitose in 1:700 scale from Pit-Road

A plastic kit of the Japanese aircraft carrier Chitose in 1:700 scale from the Japanese maker Pit-Road. 1:700 is the standard for warships, so the finished model will sit in a collection beside cruisers and destroyers of the same scale while staying manageable in size. Against a destroyer, a carrier offers larger continuous deck areas, which anyone who wants to play with painting and marking a flight deck will appreciate.

The real subject

Chitose was originally built as a seaplane tender and only during the war was she rebuilt into a light aircraft carrier with a full-length flight deck. This dual role is typical of the Imperial Japanese Navy: a number of vessels were built with a later conversion into aircraft carriers in mind. In her carrier form Chitose served together with her sister ship in the last great battles off the Philippines in the autumn of 1944, where she was sunk by air attack.

Building and painting tips

The most demanding part of the build is a flat flight deck. It pays to prop it up and let the joints cure completely so that it does not sag. Apply liquid cement for plastic with a small brush along the edge of the joint. The deck supports, cranes and masts are a rewarding place for etched accessories. Spray the paint with an airbrush in thin coats; the wooden part of the deck is usually set apart from the gray hull, and the deck markings can be done with decals or with masking. A restrained wash will bring out the engraved lines, while heavy weathering soon looks coarse in 1:700.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of the Imperial Japanese Navy
  • modelers who build aircraft carriers in 1:700 scale
  • more experienced builders with experience of large deck areas
  • those interested in the battles off the Philippines in the autumn of 1944

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
