About product

The destroyer Yoizuki in 1:700 from the manufacturer Aoshima

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese destroyer Yoizuki in 1:700 from the waterline range. Waterline means that the model has a hull only down to the waterline, so it looks as though it were sitting on the surface and needs no stand. Aoshima is a Japanese manufacturer with a long tradition in models of warships, and the molds for this ship are among the newer ones, with finely made deck fittings. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The Yoizuki belonged to the Akizuki class, that is to the large Japanese destroyers designed above all for the anti-aircraft defense of formations. The main armament was made up of twin turrets with 100 mm guns of high muzzle velocity, complemented by anti-aircraft automatic guns and torpedo armament. The ship was completed only in January 1945, in the simplified form of the later units of the class, and took practically no part in the decisive operations. She survived the end of the war. She then served on repatriation voyages and as war reparations was handed over to the Chinese navy, where she sailed under a new name for a number of years.

Building and painting tips

In 1:700 it is cleanliness of work that decides. Cut the small parts off with a sharp knife or with nippers for photo-etch and clean them up with a fine-grain file. It is practical to paint the hull and the decks separately and glue them together only after painting; the deck lines and the details stand out after a fine wash and a dry brush. The railings, the radars and the cranes are often replaced with photo-etched parts, which are glued with a minute amount of super glue. The model looks good on a base imitating the water surface, which can also be made with modeling casting resin.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of Japanese warships in 1:700
  • modelers who build whole formations of vessels for a display case
  • anyone interested in the late units of the Japanese fleet
  • builders of dioramas with a water surface

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The model has a hull only down to the waterline, that is without the underwater part. You stand it straight on a base imitating the water surface and need no stand.

The Yoizuki was a Japanese destroyer of the Akizuki class, completed in January 1945. She survived the end of the war and was handed over to the Chinese navy as war reparations.

They are not necessary; the model can be built from the plastic alone. Photo-etched railings and radars will move the result on markedly in this scale, though.

Yes, if you do not mind small parts. Patience, a sharp knife and a fine file are enough.
