A plastic kit of the Japanese light cruiser Nagara in 1:700 scale from the Waterline Series range. The Waterline designation means that the model captures the hull only down to the waterline and is built without the lower part of the hull: the finished ship is laid on a base representing the surface of the sea, so it combines well with other models of the same range. The length of the finished model is roughly twenty centimeters. The maker is the Japanese firm Tamiya.
The Nagara was the lead ship of a six-strong class of light cruisers of about 5500 tons displacement, designed at the start of the 1920s. The design started from the British school of light cruiser building and put the emphasis on speed; its characteristic features were the spoon-shaped bow and the three funnels. The ships of this class served as flagships of destroyer squadrons and during the war went through modifications in which the anti-aircraft armament was strengthened. The Nagara was sunk in 1944. The kit captures the ship in its late wartime form.
First glue the two halves of the hull together and check that the lower edge lies exactly in one plane, otherwise the model will rock on its base. Fill and sand the seam before you fit the superstructures. Prepare and paint the small parts, such as the guns, the crane and the masts, on a stick, and only then fit them. Start the painting with an overall base in the gray shade of the hull, set the deck apart with a darker or brownish tone and bring the details out with a wash and a light dry brush. At the end apply a matte varnish. Photo-etched railings and rigging stretched from thin thread will lift the look of the model markedly.
