A kit of a surface ship in injection-molded plastic captures an escort frigate of the Knox class. The model is meant to be glued together and painted. The 1:700 scale is the most widespread one for modern surface vessels, so a finished model fits in well among other ships in a display case and on a shared diorama too.
The frigates of the Knox class came about as a numerous line of escort ships of the US Navy aimed above all at fighting submarines. Characteristic of them is a tall continuous superstructure merging with the bow, a single funnel built into the mast structure and single-shaft propulsion. The armament consisted of a gun mount forward, anti-submarine means and torpedo tubes, later supplemented with close-in defense systems. After being retired from American service a number of units went on serving with allied navies, so the same hull appears in several national schemes.
With ships in 1:700 scale it pays to proceed from the hull: sand the parting gap carefully, even out the decks and only then fit the superstructures. Glue the small aerials and masts on only after the basic painting, otherwise they are easily broken off. Use matte shades of gray on the hull, distinguish the decks with a darker tone, and a thinned wash will manage the fine emphasis of the panel lines. Add-on photo-etched railings, ladders and radars will lift a finished model markedly, but they are sold separately. Before applying decals, go over the area with gloss varnish and unify the surface at the end with a matte one.
