A set from the SPACE series by the Czech manufacturer Eduard for ship models in 1:700 scale. These are neither resin nor photo-etched parts but what are known as 3D decals: items with a raised relief printed directly on decal paper, with their colors already finished. What the set holds are life buoys, that is small deck equipment that in this scale cannot realistically be made as separate castings. It is not a kit of a ship; the set is added to a finished model.
The procedure differs from that for ordinary decals: cut out, moisten only the carrier paper, lift the item off with tweezers and fix it with PVA glue (white glue). The relief reacts to a softener differently from a thin decal film; its chemistry attacks the raised shape and ruins the item, so do not use a softener at all. The surface has to be smooth and glossy; on a matte area air is trapped under the film and the edges turn white.
This is the whole point of the SPACE series: the colors are printed at the factory, so nothing is painted over. Spraying over them with an opaque paint would cancel exactly the property the set exists for. The only thing done to the buoys is unifying the surface: once dry, the whole area is gone over with a matte or semi-matte varnish, so that the glossy decal film does not shine against the finish of the deck around it. If you want to work the buoys into the weathering, run a heavily thinned wash only around them, not over them. They are applied, logically, only after the surroundings have been sprayed and varnished, never before.
This is an accessory, not a kit of a ship. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
