About product

The aircraft-carrying cruiser Mogami in her 1944 state, 1:700 scale

A plastic kit of the Japanese cruiser Mogami from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi, capturing the ship in her state of 1944. Mind the English name of the item: she is not an aircraft carrier but a heavy cruiser converted into an aircraft-carrying, that is, a seaplane cruiser. In place of the rear gun turrets the ship carried a broad deck for reconnaissance floatplanes, which were lowered by cranes and launched from catapults. The 1:700 scale is the standard for ship models and makes it possible to put together a collection in comparable sizes.

The real subject

The Mogami was the prototype of the class of the same name, which Japan built originally with 155 mm guns and later rearmed to 203 mm. At the Battle of Midway in 1942 the ship was heavily damaged in a collision and the air attack that followed. During the repair the rear turrets were removed and a flight and handling deck for several seaplanes arose in their place, which turned the ship into a reconnaissance aircraft-carrying cruiser of a kind no other navy had. In this guise she served until the autumn of 1944, when she was lost during the night action in Surigao Strait.

Building and painting tips

The rear deck for the seaplanes is the recognition mark of this ship, so build and paint it as an assembly of its own and fit the catapults and the rails only at the end. The cranes and the masts are thin and easily twisted; it helps to reinforce them or to replace them with fine wire. Enliven the wooden surfaces with a wash into the joints and the steel surfaces with fine shading. Deal with the underwater part and the waterline with masking tape. The model also suits being completed with other ships of one force in the same scale.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of Japanese cruisers of the Second World War
  • anyone interested in untypical vessels that have no parallel in other fleets
  • modelers putting together a fleet in 1:700 scale
  • more experienced builders of ship models

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

She is not. She is a heavy cruiser whose rear gun turrets were removed during the repair after 1942 and replaced by a deck for reconnaissance seaplanes. The English name of the item describes it imprecisely.

The year sets the configuration of the ship. By 1944 the Mogami already had the rear flight deck and reworked anti-aircraft armament, which differs from her original state.

The difference lies in whether the model ends at the waterline or also holds the underwater part. Check the treatment of the hull on the packaging.

Check the contents of the package on the packaging. The manufacturer also makes aircraft in 1:700 scale as sets of their own.
